Here Are 9 Steps To Writing a Good Blog
Writing a Blog does not have to be hard or complicated. All you do is determine what the blog stands for, who you want to target and what issues do you want to solve for your audience.
So in writing a blog take the time to study your “purpose” your “audience”, your “branding” and what is it you want to “accomplish.”
I often get the question, “How long does it take to write a blog?”
In the beginning it would normally take me 1-2 hours. That’s because I was putting out a blog every day with less than good content. As I became better and understood how blogging works it take me approximately 2 days.
Now you can do it less than that, but to write a good blog I normally plan 2 days.
Here is my process: I’ll start writing a “Draft” blog every Monday.
Over the course of the day I will go back and make adjustments. By day 2, I will have a completed final product to be published.
So Monday is my Blog Day. I may begin to write 2-3 blogs during the day. What happens is that as I write a blog, another thought comes to mind and I will make notes to start another blog. As I said by day’s end I will have 2-3 Draft Blogs.
On Day 2 (and that could be any day of the week) I will go back and complete 1 blog for publication and make adjustment to the others.
At any given time I will have Draft Blogs in the “Pipeline” ready to be completed. I have found over time that this helps and I don’t feel pressured in coming up with content.
Mind you, I’m not spending 8, 9 or 10 hours each day on the blog post. I’m putting in at least a few hours each days. The idea here is to have 1 Blog Post each week with good content.
What I did was to identify the 9 Steps To Writing A Blog as a guide that helps me put together compelling content. I keep this posted next to my computer.
Let me identify my process:
- Research (I do a keyword research on what my bog will be about)
- Writing 1st draft
- Editing for Final draft
- Proofreading
- Fact checking
- Formatting for visual appeal
- Adding images
- Optimizing for on page SEO
- Creating a compelling Call To Action
The problem with most bloggers are they put out a blog post for the sake of posting. And that’s what I use to do. In my opinion that degrades the value of your blog. So instead of posting for the sake of posting, I recommend publishing 1-2 solid, high quality pieces of content per week…
Do this once a week and you will have more time to create high quality content without the pressure of “Getting It Out Now.” You will also find that more people seeing your content and reading your message.
Your Content Needs To Have An Impact
Your content has to do something to advance your business such as make sales, generate leads, branding you, etc. So if your writing a blog, keep in mind what you want your reader to do.
Do you want to make a sale? Or are you looking for leads? Maybe your trying to brand yourself? What ever your trying to accomplish, write a blog with this in mind.
If your new to blogging understand that it takes a fair amount of time and effort to create content that engages people that converts them to either leads or sales.
This is the reason I only do 1 blog post per week. Now if your experienced, you may be able to create more post. Again, be careful here in not over doing it to the point that you sacrifice your blog.
Your content has to have a tangible, measurable, business impact otherwise you’re wasting your time and effort.

How Blogging Has Changed
Back in 2005 there was an estimated 7.8 million blogs.
Today it is estimated that there are over 279 million blogs!!
What does that mean?
It means…
- There is more blogging “competition” today than ever before
- Everyone and their brother can and has a blog
- There is no shortage of content out there for your potential audience to choose from
That means there is more competition than ever. This get back to having good, valuable content so that you stand-out-from-the-crowd. So again, most bloggers tend to put out contend for the sake of posting. Your different, you have something people want and are looking. As mentioned earlier, identify your audience, what are they looking for and how can you write a blog that address their desires.
The question then is…
- How are you going to make your mark?
- How are you going to stand out from the crowd?
- What do I write about?
Understand Blogging Has Changed
Today, you can’t get away with creating an average piece of content and think…
“Well as long as I do this consistently… everything should work out well, right?”
Wrong!
Poor or even mediocre content, even when published consistently… will NOT have the same kind of business impact that good content provides.
For example; I Google and entered in the search term…
“How to get leads for Network Marketing”.
I got 6,090,000 results that came up from that search.
So I did some research.
I start clicking through the different results to see which one will satisfy my curiosity.
However, if an entry doesn’t grab my attention right away…
Or…
If the content isn’t going deep enough into the topic to give me the answers I’m looking for…
I immediately click the “back” button knowing there are literally millions of other potential pieces of content that I can access instead.
This is what I mean by “competition”.
You’re not necessarily competing against another marketer in the sense that “my blog is better than your blog”.
What you’re competing for is your audience’s attention.
Is your content capturing the attention of your audience?
If you’re not producing content at a high level (note: I didn’t say frequent level) you risk losing the attention of your potential prospect.
Without their attention your content isn’t creating the business impact that you hoped it would when you originally created it.
We’re not in the early 2000’s anymore when you could simply blog consistently and get tons of “Google Love.”
The idea being that you could blog consistently, get lots of visitors to your blog, and then those visitors would become consistent followers.… those days are over.
Now more than ever it is critical that your content captures your reader’s attention, pulls them through your content, and provides them a solution to there search and issues.
What Do I Write About?
WOW that’s a difficult question to answer. What do I write about?
First you need to answer these 2 questions:
- What is the purpose of your blog?
- Who are you trying to attract?
By knowing these answers you will have a better understanding of What Do I Write About?
A good blog will entertain, inform, answer question, solve problems, give tips, suggestions and advice. Mix them up.
Write a Blog to entertain then another to solve problems, maybe develop an article on How To.
Give tips and advice on another blog. Write a Blog to brand yourself.
Read a good book? Write about it. Attended a webinar? Write about it. Did you go to see a movie? Write about it. Did you do a keyword search on what people are searching for? Write a Blog. The amount of content is “endless.”
However stay true to your identity. If your in Network Marketing or the Home Based Business industry, your blog should be congruent to your industry. Solve Network Marketing problems.
So if your blog is all about Network Marketing it would not be advised to write a blog about how to build a bird cage. Stay congruent to your identity.
Final Thought
The bottom line to all of this is…“How do you want your audience to see you? “
As someone who pumps out a lot of vanilla content that doesn’t go very deep into solving problems or helping them out.
Or…
As someone who really knows what they’re talking about, produces excellent content, and is worth giving their time and attention to every time a new blog post is published.
I’m going to assume you’d prefer to be considered the latter.
Therefore, don’t feel the need to produce content daily just to say…“Phew! I got a blog post done today!”
Instead, put in the time and meaningful thought that is required to create quality content that serves your business purpose and provides a solution to your reader’s pain.
When you do that, you’ll start getting the results from your blog that you’ve always hoped for.
