5 Tips For Finding Work/Life Balance As An Entrepreneur

How do you find work/life balance?

The entrepreneurial road is not an easy one.  Ask any entrepreneur and they will tell you that it took time, failures, focus and never quitting.

However we must find balance, or we will live in our business, and never come out of it.

Here’s what I mean….

There are times, when I look at what others are doing.  I sometimes it feels like I should be doing more.

I think, maybe I’m not moving fast enough or I’m moving too fast?

Then I start to drive myself into a spiral of feeling overwhelmed.

Okay, let’s say I do reach one of my goals, but I don’t allow myself time to celebrate; I’m already moving on to the next goal.

I call it the “Let’s Move On?” syndrome, where even though I’ve been successful, I feel drained.  I haven’t taken time to stop and celebrate my accomplishments.

At times, I’ve been unhappy on this entrepreneurial journey.

Because money doesn’t matter when you loose balance in your life.  So you have to get your priorities straight.

So the question is…..

Are you all over the place or do you have a clear vision of where your going?

Sometimes, when we’re starting out as entrepreneurs,

  • We don’t have a plan.
  • We don’t have goals.
  • We don’t have a vision.
  • And we don’t even know sometimes what we’re doing.
  • We don’t even know when we have arrived.
  • We just know that we want “it”…
  • We see “it”…
  • And we have hopes, and dreams, and desires.

Do you sometimes think, “What the hell am I doing?”  And, “Why am I doing this?”

I know exactly how this feels, because I’ve been there and I’ve been overwhelmed.

And it’s always this constant battle of trying to figure out what works for you, your family, and your lifestyle.

Success and balance is not going to happen overnight.

I want to give you “5 Tips For Finding Work/Life Balance As An Entrepreneur” based on what I’ve been working on in my business…

Before I begin, I want to thank Julie Burke for these 5 Tips.

First, you must have a rock-solid vision and a plan to execute it, or you’ll just give up.  I’ll even go as far as saying, “A one paragraph plan is better than having NO Plans.”

I promise you—without a plan you will throw in the towel.

Or you might hustle to hit a goal, but feel like crap through the process.

So you must have a clear plan to execute to feel confident about what you’re doing and when you’re supposed to be doing it.

As you’re creating your vision and your action plan, know what it is you’re working towards in terms of dividing up your time.

I had to go back and create a whole new vision recently as things changed in my life.

I’d already created a vision board, but it had grown stale, so I had to go back and create a whole new vision and get more specific.

My vision board is now fresh and actionable.

That’s the key.  You need a clear rock-solid vision on your wants, desires and goals.

Entrepreneurs have a clear vision of where they are going!

Here was one of my visions:  I want to take the family on a cruise, so I cut out a picture of a cruise ship and placed it next to the computer.  We took the cruise!

Next, you must create a daily action plan with your top 3 items so you don’t create more chaos for yourself.

The problem I’ve seen is that we tend to create a “TO-DO” list that’s pages long.  That only creates frustration.  Plan on doing only 3 items today/this week and get it done.

I need to make sure I’m getting stuff done that actually matters so I pick only 3 items that will move me forward.

For example:  I wanted to understand how Pretty Links worked.  As one of my top 3 for the week I took a day and studied Pretty Links.

When you have to divide and prioritize your time, it forces you to get laser-focused and attack your daily list of tasks.

Here’s a tip…

Your most important item of the day should be doing something that’s going to produce income.

…whether it’s following-up with leads, following-up with possible prospects, enrolling them into your network marketing business, creating a Facebook ad, creating a custom audience list, etc.

You have to know people’s pain points and WHO you’re speaking to, so you know how to create your content or how you communicate with them.

You must have developed your own Avatar.  The person who fits your target audience.

Don’t know how to create your Avatar?  How to Create a Customer Avatar and What Is An Avatar?

Your Action might be to create your latest blog post or do Facebook Live.

Or maybe it’s creating your first kick-butt webinar.

In fact, I’m redoing my Action Plan.   This is one of the 3 items I’m currently focused on.

Whatever it is that’s going to help you produce income, that’s where you focus.

Focus on what you need to DO and get it DONE now.  What you need to focus on for tomorrow, next week, next month, next year can wait until your completed your 3 items.

Entrepreneurs always focus their actions today before they start new actions tomorrow.

Next you need to eliminate distractions, put your phone on “Do not disturb” mode, and close all unnecessary browser windows.

I can’t tell you how many times I get distracted in a day.  Once I laid out my Action Plan and my 3 items those distractions disappeared.

Each morning, I put my phone on “Do not disturb” mode for at least two to three hours.

It is amazing how much more I accomplish now that my phone isn’t buzzing every minute.

From 10:00 AM to 12:00 my family knows I’m working.  After 12:00 it’s family time.

On my desk under the computer is a silver Timer I purchased for $10.00.  This was the best $10.00 I’ve spent.

I set my $10.00 timer to count down for 2 hours.  This way I know when to take a break and check messages or the family.

I dedicate a half-hour to checking messages.  I will normally spend another half-hour doing something other than my personal business.

My schedule is to work at my business for two hours, break for an hour…then get back to it again.  All of this is set on my $10.00 silver timer (Target)!

This has been extremely helpful in my business for being more productive and finding balance.

Watch an Entrepreneur at work.  They have “blinders” on.  They are so focused on the item at hand that any distraction is ignored.

Never, never judge yourself against others or your self…period.

Do you ever beat yourself up for not doing enough or too much?

This might sound trivial, but you’ve got to stop judging yourself!

I wake up some mornings feeling like…

“I have to do this. I have to do that.”

I then Stop!  I collect my thoughts and the task I have at hand today.

What I’m saying, “You must focus on that moment in that time.”  I have already scheduled my day from the night before.   So now I can clear my mind and relax.

I normally spend time in the morning with my little girl before she goes off to school.  My wife and I will visit for a while before I go to my home office and she does her daily routines.

If you don’t have children or don’t have a spouse, allow yourself to spend part of your morning doing something for you.

Read a book or go to the gym.

Whatever it is, schedule it!

The start of your day creates your day, so if the start of your day is pure craziness, it’s probably going to be crazy the rest of the day.

So plan your mornings and don’t add stress to your life.

Get yourself on a schedule.  Get a $10.00 Silver Timer (Target)

Messages and emails will be there later.

I know they’re going to pile up and it’s going to be more work, but it’s worth it.

Don’t judge yourself…live your life.  Take a day off from your business if you have to.

This is not a race but a calculated plan to build your home business in YOUR TIME FRAME.

Finally, you need to be patient.

Now, truth be told, I really hate this statement, because it’s easier said than done, but it’s so crucial for your business.

Your business is ALWAYS a work in progress, a plan.

You’re not going to learn everything there is to know about Facebook ads, custom audiences, sales funnels and blogging in a day.

This is an on-going, test-and-tweak process, not an overnight journey.

I’ve had my sales funnel up and running for months and I’m constantly testing and tweaking.

It never ends, so you must be patient, and kind to yourself through this process.

Be conscious of what you’re working towards.

Also, be conscious of what is working for you and what isn’t working for you.

And whatever isn’t working, dump it.

One of my daily task is…..

Consistently focusing on building/tweaking my Facebook Fan Page

…always doing something to grow my audience, and to build a relationship with that audience.

I started at zero, just like everyone else.

And while it didn’t happen overnight, I now have followers on Facebook.

I have an active community where I take the time to build relationships.

This is whats working for me in my business.

As soon as I learned to be patient, the stress level when away, my daily actions got done, I was more productive and my family time increased.
