Being a leader is a fun and rewarding part of the network marketing industry and when you know and implement these simple skills it will make the position even more FUN and REWARDING!  There is no accident in their leadership skills. They gained the leadership by trial and error.  Learning and doing.  Mistakes and corrections.  Time and patience.

A good leader sets a good example.  Your downline and customers will follow your example.  Look at any good leader and you will see people following them.  Leaders will attract leaders.  This is expectedly true in network marketing.

Leaders are always learning.  Some of the top leaders in business spend hundreds of dollars vey year “learning.” They read, attend events, seminars and teach.  Keep learning and you can and will be a great leader.

Finally, some of the best leaders I know of want to help others.  By helping they are following a golden rule…”give and you will receive.”

Let’s take a closer look at how to become the leader you want to be.  I suggest you read and re-read.  Then take the tips and compile them into an action plan.

  • Change yourself first! If there are things that need changing in your life and business change yourself first. It’s easy for leaders to find things that aren’t right with their team members, but what we fail to realize is we are often guilty of doing the same things, we’ve just put our blinders on when it comes to taking a good look at ourselves! Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing, worry about what you are doing and what positive changes you can make in your life.  Again lead by example.
  • It’s not how many people you want to help in your business opportunity, but how you want to help them.  When new people join a network marketing company, they are told that “everyone” is a prospect.  That is stinking thinkin.  Not everyone makes good prospect.  If you do your job well, you will only invite people who want what you have.  The reason for high failure in this industry is that many are just not cut out to be a network marketer. “Who needs what our MLM Company has to offer?” That  should be your thought when you approach a possible prospect.  Learn Attraction Marketing and your business will be successful.
  • Realize that human beings are emotional and what we say and do is based on our emotions. Therefore, to be able to connect with and influence others we need to understand what makes them tick.  Before you ever recruit a new person in your business, take time to understand what they want and why.  Also take time to find out about your team members, their goals and their plans for their business.  At this point you want to know the personally of the team member.  Is the person Reactive or Pro-Active?

Example: A consultant has a party where only 2 people show up, immediately they call you complaining about the terrible party and states their frustrated about the business. That is REACTIVE! Another consultant has the same thing happen but instead of calling and complaining they asks for advice on how to increase the attendance for the next party. PRO-ACTIVE! A good leader will help convert reactive people to pro-active people! Just keep asking, “What can you do to get better results next time?”

  • Good leaders are empathetic and sensitive to others. They listen to what others are saying, and they listen for what’s being said between the lines. The more you listen the more they will trust you. You need to be a trusted friend and advisor while encouraging your team members to find solutions to grow personally and professionally.

I was recently at an event in which 12 of use sat down with one of the leaders.  About 45 minutes later I left with 3 of my teammates.  One of the teammate complimented on how Mike was such a good talker.  I reminded him that Mike may have said 20 word in 45 minutes…he spent most of the time LISTENING.

  • One of the greatest ways to influence others is by asking questions and really listening to the answers. Don’t state a comment if you can ask a question.

Example: Mary is upset because she is not booking many parties or business opportunity meetings. Instead of telling her that she is not working hard enough at her job, ask her what methods she is using to get her bookings. Ask questions. Maybe you can use an example of how the top leaders are getting people to see their business opportunity.

  • Set a good example! People love to follow a leader that knows where he or she is going and that sets an example for others to follow. Good leaders are self-disciplined, have clear ideals and continually aspire to reach their goals. Do what you say you are going to do. Do what you are asking them to do! The speed of the leader is the speed of the pack!
  • Keep Learning! When you arrive at a leadership level it’s the perfect time to learn new skills so you and your team can keep ahead in the game! Learn from those who have had success and can show you the way. Theories don’t Work! Systems Work! Find a leadership system that will take you beyond where you want to go!

Becoming the leader you want to be is not that difficult.  Leaders are not born, they acquire the skills of a leader through experience, doing, learning, and seeking help and advice.  To be a good leader in network marketing or any other business, learn the basics and build on it.  Time is not your enemy.  Leadership is learned over time.
