How To Create Your Customer Avatar

Ask any successful network marketer out there and they’ll say, “You must have a clearly defined Customer Avatar.”

But the problem is…How To Create Your Customer Avatar?  And How To Attract Your Ideal Customer?

Most Network Marketers Have No Idea How To Create A Customer Avatar

Most Network Marketers Have No Idea How To Create A Customer Avatar

Most network marketers have no idea of what is a Customer Avatar is or how to clearly define one.

In fact I was or have been in network marketing for years and never heard of a Customer Avatar.  Mention Customer Avatar, I would have only looked back at you with blank eyes.

After hearing about Customer Avatar, I began to look at how important this was to any network marketer who whats to stop struggling with recruiting the wrong people in their network marketing business.  In my opinion, if you don’t identify your ideal customer or Customer Avatar you might just as well quit your network marketing business.

Harsh?  Yes.  But if your struggling with your business, it’s most likely your not finding the right people.

How To Become The Hunted, Instead Of The Hunter

So today, the 3 questions I get asked most often regarding, the Customer Avatar are:

  1.  “How do I define my Customer Avatar?”
  2.  “Will my Customer Avatar help grow my business?”
  3.  “Is this also my targeted audience?”

Let’s examine the 3 question and other questions that will help you in creating your own Customer Avatar.

I will tell you that it took me about a week to create my ideal customer.  Over the following two month, I “tweaked” my ideal customer until I fully understood him or her.  Don’t understand what I just said, “I fully understand him or her,” you will at the end of this article.

1. How Do I Define My Customer Avatar?

If you want to define your Customer Avatar and make them feel like you’re speaking directly to them, you must define their Characteristics, their Likes and Dislikes, their Struggles, what do they Want and how you maybe able to Help them.

I can remember my mentor telling me:

  • “If you try to attract everyone you’ll end up attracting nobody.”
  • “If you try to speak to everybody you’ll end up speaking to nobody.”

Your Customer Avatar allows you to perfect your marketing message so it appeals to a “specific someone rather than a “generic everyone”.

A well defined Avatar allows you to connect on an emotional level with your ideal customer or prospect.

In order to connect on an emotional level with your ideal customer or prospect, you’ll need to get to find their fears and deepest desires.

Do they fear Success or Failure?  Do they want a new House or Car or Travel? What Financial fears are they afraid of?  Are they Struggling with their business opportunity?

And in order to do that, you’ll need to ask yourself the following 12 questions.

2. Will My Customer Avatar Help Grow My Business?

To this question, the answer is YES.

“If you don’t knowing where you are going how do you know when you have arrived?”

Let’s use an example:  Let’s say you talked to 20 people this month about your business opportunity.  How many joined?  Well in my experience, maybe 1.  If they stay around for the next couple months I may have a good recruit.  However, the reality is that no one joined and you wasted the month and now frustrated.

An example with a Customer Avatar:  Again, you talked to 20 people this month about your business opportunity only this time you sponsored 12.  In my experience, about half with stay around and 4 will go on and build a good business.

Will a good Customer Avatar Help Grow My Business?  I would rather spend my time and efforts talking with my targeted ideal customer than to Just Anyone.

3. Is This Also My Targeted Audience?

YES!

Your targeted audience are people who what what you have to offer.  Your targeted audience are the ones you have identified as a perfect prospect.  Is it friends, family, work mates or class mates? Maybe, but most likely NOT.  Your Targeted Audience are people you don’t know yet.

Your Customer Avatar: Attract The Ideal Customer To You

One of the many challenges that ALL network marketers face is how to find and attract the ideal customer to their business opportunity.

… Most marketers will spend considerable amounts of time and energy and even money on paid traffic and then wonder why they’re not getting many conversions.

… Most network marketers will spend time and energy trying to talk someone into joining their business opportunity with people who have no desire to join.

… Many network marketers will spend money on paid traffic to attract anyone who will listen…most have deft ears.

You can have a fantastic offer but if you’re not getting the right people then you have a huge problem.

Creating your Customer Avatar or Ideal Customer is important that many business will either succeed or fail because they failed this very important step in developing their business.

“If you don’t have a Customer Avatar who you’re specifically marketing to you’ll end up wasting countless hours, time, energy and advertising dollars with noting to show.”

Which is exactly why you need a clearly defined your Customer Avatar!

But let’s first answer the question….

What Is A Customer Avatar?

A Customer Avatar is simply a detailed profile of your target audience.

Imagine that you’re a writing a screenplay for a movie and you need to create the main character.

You would give that character…

  • a name
  • an age
  • personally
  • specific interests
  • a specific job
  • a spouse
  • kids
  • likes and dislikes
  • their daily struggles
  • their wants
  • challenges

At the end of the screenplay, their success or their outcome.

When creating my Customer Avatar, I took actual characteristics from people I’ve know or have known and weave them into the characteristics of my new character.

Just like the screenplay, your well defined Customer Avatar is an individual with a specific…

  • Name
  • Age
  • Family situation
  • Number of children (if they have children)
  • Demographics and characteristics that make them who they are
  • Where they live
  • What do they want
  • What challenges do they face
  • Are they in Network Marketing and struggling or have Quit
  • Are they looking to establishing a home based business
My Business didn't happen at first.

My Business didn’t happen at first.

You might use certain aspects of your own situation to round out your Avatar’s profile.

In my case I used certain aspects of my former self to help create my Avatar.

What I mean is…what was life like for me BEFORE I started using my product and/or got involved with my business opportunity venture.

By all means, feel free to leverage your own situation and the “pains” or challenges that you’ve dealt with to help create the details of your own Customer Avatar.

Finally, one critical element of your Customer Avatar is that they must have the “pain” that is associated with the solution that your offer provides.

If you leave the pain(s) out of your Customer Avatar’s description then you won’t be able to speak to your avatar effectively when promoting your offer.

Without a doubt, your product or opportunity must provide a solution to a specific problem.

So it only makes sense that when creating your Customer Avatar he/she must suffer from the “pain” that your product or opportunity promises to fix.

Having said all that, let’s get down to Identifying You Customer Avatar.

14 Questions To Define Your Customer Avatar

In order to properly define your Customer Avatar you will need to ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Where does my avatar hang out?
  2. What websites do they go to?
  3. What do they read?
  4. What do they watch on tv?
  5. What do they do in their free time?
  6. What are their goals?
  7. Who are their heroes?
  8. Who are their enemies?
  9. Who do the want to please?
  10. Who are they responsible for?
  11. Who might they let down or fail?
  12. What keeps them up at night?
  13. Are they currently in Network Marketing
  14. Are they struggling to keep their business opportunity growing or have they quit

Now, don’t stop with just thinking about these questions.  As I mentioned earlier, it took a week to create my Ideal Customer or Avatar and several months rewriting until I got the perfect Customer or Prospect.

I highly suggest you write out your Customer Avatar on a note pad or computer and keep it handy for reference.

My ideal customer or prospect based upon my Avatar is Jenny:

Jenny is 38 years young with medium short dark hair. Jenny is a stylish 5 foot 7 inch petite friendly lady with two children. Jenny married a co-worker, Steve at her first job. Their first child is named Brice. Brice is 10 and Myra is now 8.

Jenny grew up in a small Midwest town. After she graduated from high school, she went to a small college close to her town so she could be near family……

My “Jenny” Avatar is two pages and I identify her challenges and struggles with her business and family life.  I also include a “picture” of Jenny.  My Avatar is in Word and on my computer.

Customer Avatar: The Big Picture

Your Avatar dictates your targeting….“If you try to attract everyone you’ll end up attracting nobody.”

Therefore, you should think long and hard about your avatar and understand that this is not something to be taken lightly.

As mentioned before, is this a critical step in the success or failure of your home based business or business opportunity.

Please…don’t take this likely or just a passing phase of your business.

Your Avatar is who you’re looking for.

So whether you’re writing a broadcast email…or you’re creating a piece of content to post on your blog or Facebook Fan page…

All of your content needs to be written with your Avatar in mind!

Again, if you…“If you try to speak to everybody you’ll end up speaking to nobody.”

So write as if you’re talking specifically to your Avatar rather than a large target market.  Rifle in on your ideal customer rather than the “shotgun” approach.

Stop Wasting Time and Energy Chasing Dead Beat Leads and Prospects.

Final Thoughts

So in conclusion, one of the main concepts you should be thinking about is…

“What is the motivation of my Avatar?”

If you have a blog, create content that address your Customer Avatar’s needs, desires and struggles.  Offer a solution.

If your recruiting people in your business opportunity via Facebook, YouTube or even one-on-one have your Customer Avatar in mind and ONLY talk to those who meet your requirements.

Stay away from “tire kickers” and “toe dippers.”  They will only waste your time and cause frustration.

Then from time to time you should take a mental audit and ask yourself…

  1. “Is my customer avatar defined well enough?”
  2. “Is my blog content specific enough based on the pains of my Avatar?”
  3. “Are my ads targeting the right people based on my Avatar?”

Remember: the Avatar dictates the message…and once you have your Customer Avatar dialed in –  you’re 80% of the way there with your marketing.
