Before I get to the heart of the issue, let me ask you a question…
Why did you decide to become an entrepreneur?
Let me go first…
My reasons were very simple.
“I wanted to be my own boss and control my time. The idea of working under someone else’s thumb made me cringe. Plus I wanted to be in charge of how much money I can made.
I wanted to work with my own schedule. I wanted to work my own hours. I wanted to work from anywhere.”
I think most people fall into one, both or all of these categories.
It could also be for different reasons. “More time with the family. More time to travel. More time to sleep in and play video games.”
Having control of your time is a huge motivator for many of us in network marketing.
Same thing can be said about money. “How much money or how little money you earn is under your control…not someone else!”
No matter what your reason for desiring more wealth, we all desire it.
However, as you probably figured out, having an entrepreneurial mindset and a burning desire to make a lot of money isn’t enough to be a smashing success.
You have to have the desire…the burning desire to have your very own highly successful business.
You also have to have good work ethics, skills and mind set to develop and grow.
Thousands of new business are started each day and hundreds are gone within months or years.
WHY?
- Lack of Knowledge
- Lack of Skills
- Lack of Motivation
- Lack of Training
- Lack of Mindset
- Lack of Resources
- Lack of Desire
- Lack of Support
- Lack of Money
Here’s an eye-opening stat about the #1 reason for network marketing business failure.
- 80% of new businesses fail because there’s no advance coaching or training
- People are simply not that interested in working hard enough to build a business
Think about that for a second…
- You can have a great product
- You can have a great comp plan
- You can have pretty marketing brochures and a good looking website with a snazzy video
- But if you don’t WORK you won’t make a dime
- And if you don’t have network marketing skills…what do you have?
Now, if you haven’t had much success with your business, does that mean you should dump your MLM company and go look for another?
NO!
You can stick with your current MLM company and rise to the very top of the leaderboard, by making one simple, but critical shift.
WORK!
That is the one shift that will guarantee your success….WORK!
Oh many say they will….but when it comes down to it…they don’t.
I know of a president who was turned down so many times he should have given up. He didn’t and became one of the most revered president…Abraham Lincoln.
I know of a network marketer who spent 6 years trying to build his business. Today he is the top GO-TO professional in the business.
I know of another network marketer who got over 200 No’s before he got a Yes. Today he has videos, books, podcast and is considered the best network marketing coach ever.
I know of an actor who spent 10 years trying to get noticed. He slept in his car, friends basement, worked in restaurants as a waiter. Today, studios line up to get him.
One More:
I know of a writer who wrote books for 25 years never getting one publisher to publish her books. Movies are now made from her books.
What did these people have that many network marketers lack….belief in themself and WORK.
How Do You “Work” A Network Marketing Business?
This was a question that weighed on me when I was first starting down this path: “how do you work a network marketing business?”
When I first started, I was told something that really bothered me about recruiting…
My up-line and the MLM company party line was “Recruit everyone within 3 feet.” “If they can talk, if they breath, if they can walk…recruit them!”
The MLM company must have known what it took to create success because they were very successful.
My sponsor had a successful business and was creating a network marketing business to replace his current business.
He invited me to his house for a training session.
When I got to his house, I sat through his training session, I was extremely disappointed.
Basically, for over an hour I sat in his living room as he drew on a whiteboard, and listened to him give a big spiel that was mostly “fluff.”
Worst of all, he didn’t teach me anything which even remotely resembled a strategy I could use to recruit network marketers.
He told me that by talking to everyone..friends and family and everyone within 3 feet I would be driving nice cars, living in a great house by the lake, taking vacations anytime I want and creating a financial future for the family. He told me to draw circles and put name in them. I was told to…
– Invite 10 people to your weekly meetings.
– To be up-beat…energetic.
– Talk to everyone and invite them to an “important meeting.”
I’m a bit of an introvert. This presented a problem because there was no real strategy presented.
This didn’t make sense, because he was basically saying that network marketing is a game of chance and didn’t require any skills.
Think about it…
As a business man, did he get “lucky” in his business? No, he worked really hard, and he learned processes and skills for everything he did which is how he became an entrepreneur.
As a marketing manager, I knew that people in my profession certainly didn’t become successful by luck.
No matter what profession you’re in, I’m sure you’ll agree…To be successful you need to Work, You need Desire, You need Skills, You need Motivation, You need a success Plan
I wanted to know, “How do you recruit people into this business?”
People Become Successful by Learning Skills and Getting Proficient with Them!
Luck has very little to do with it.
Even though I didn’t know much about network marketing, I knew his path couldn’t have been that easy.
After his presentation, I was looking for somebody to show me a specific process that would help me build my business in a way that made sense.
That was to recruit people to my business. This took skills, not luck.
My frustration with the lack of answers is what led me to go online and find network marketing mentors who used the Internet to build large teams.

Just like any profession, you need to learn specific skills in network marketing and how to use them.
And you need to treat what you are learning with the exact same seriousness that any professional use in their trade.
“A strategy is essentially a series of specific steps that enable you to achieve a specific goal.”
I say specific in the sense that you can draw the steps on a piece of paper or a whiteboard and map out how you’re going to achieve your goal.
If you’re not being taught any semblance of a short or long-term strategy by your up-line or MLM company, you need to run away and go somewhere else!
This is because you have 2 choices, you can either:
- Develop the strategy yourself, which is going to take a lot of time, trial and error, or
- You can find people who have already figured out exactly how to be successful in network marketing and model their strategy.
Before I was taught these steps, I tried to go-it-alone and it cost me a couple years, several MLM companies and over $5,000 wasted money.
It is much better to follow a proven process from an already-successful network marketer who’s making money and doing it in a way that was comfortable.
Personally I’m a bit of an introvert and needed a way for me to use an online recruiting method to grow my business.
In summary: I suggest you find a mentor or MLM company that gives you a proven strategy for recruiting your first person, making your first sale, and eventually reaching your short and long-term goals.
This step is the key to duplication in network marketing…
You want to teach your strategy to your downline so they can go out, succeed, make some money and make you some money in the process. The process should be simple, but not necessarily easy.
Now, recall business man I mentioned before, who told me to find 10 people?
Even though I was new, I thought it sounded simplistic, moronic, and inauthentic.
He never once mentioned how to find 10 people!
- Issue 1: He assumed we knew how, so he made the process of building the business sound easy because he didn’t want to scare us away by telling us the truth. (i.e. that we had to learn some tangible skills.)
- Issue 2: He was not doing what he preached. He approached his business in one way, while telling us to do something entirely different. This meant we couldn’t duplicate.
As a leader in my business today, I use every single process and tactic I teach to my team.
I give my team the exact same tools I use, and I’m constantly testing, refining, and improving my methods. If anything changes, I let them know.
That’s my responsibility as a leader, because…
Developing strategies isn’t the team’s responsibility; it’s the leader’s.
I’m not saying that a strategy or tactic has to be a “touchdown” the first time. It just has to deliver results that can be quantified, assessed, and be improved on overtime.
It is very likely that implementing a strategy the first time won’t go well. You have to be ok with that, as long as you are committed to improving and learning.

Unless you treat network marketing as a profession, you will not succeed. Network marketing is a profession…a profession of helping people while being rewarded for your efforts!
I’m good at what I do but it did require practice and time so that eventually what I do does become easy.
Here’s a thought, Even if it takes you 3-6 even 12 months to be effective, isn’t that’s better than 40+ years at a job?
So if you’re serious about becoming a professional in network marketing and you want to be a leader yourself, you’ve got to be committed, gain experience, develop skills, and DEPTH of understanding that is impossible to attain in any other way.
As you implement a strategy, you learn to customize it for your strengths & weaknesses and it becomes your own.
In summary: you gain experience through repetition, and you get a new depth of understanding. Eventually, you start modifying tactics and processes so that your strategies fit you and your team.
Once you have a strategy, understanding, and the subtle differences, from following steps 1-3, you’ll likely have achieved success in your business and now you’re in a position to teach what you know through video, Facebook Live, blogging, e-mails, and so on.
By creating a community and communicating with people every single day, you’ll “pay it forward.”
This will do 2 things for you…
