Have you ever wondered why is the Internet so difficult to build a business when you see so many others have such success?
Do these top professionals know something you and I don’t know and they are “holding back” what they know?
Again, Why Is The Internet So Difficult To Build A Business?
I’ll try to answer the question. But in reality, using the Internet to build your home based business or network marketing business is not that difficult.
All it take is doing one step at a time. I know what your saying now….“I know that. You still haven’t answered the question!!!”
Let’s see if I can answer the question with 10 ideas. Now some of these ideas may not pertain to your success, but just the idea alone is what I want you to think about.
So lets’ begin…with what’s working
Just about every week I talk with network marketers and MLM home business. We talk about what’s working and what isn’t. We talk about their successes and failures. I find that I spend time most of my time with newbies. As a newbie, when
tend to “fly over the place” not settling down on one strategy. Today they are on Facebook. Tomorrow on Twitter. Then its their Blog, video’s, Pintrest and a host of other social media programs.
The problem is that they never ever become proficient in one. What is your goal? Do you want to recruit people in your MLM Business? Or, are you looking for “leads” for your business? Maybe your looking to make money with your home based business? You could be just starting your Network Marketing Business and don’t know where or how to start?
Each of these are very different from one another. Looking for leads is a lot different than recruiting people in your business. Making money online is different than “looking for leads.” You first need to decide what it is you are looking for and then consternate on getting good at that one strategy.
Okay so you have a MLM Business and your are struggling. This is no different than the newbie starting a business.
One topic that comes up over and over again with both the new person and someone who is seeing some success but struggling are the same mistakes made in starting businesses.
Newbies love to know which mistakes are common so they can avoid them. Veterans love to talk about things they wish they had known or had done differently.
- “What do you wish you had done differently?”
- “What mistakes do people make starting out?”
- “I wish I hadn’t…”
- “How do you begin to grow a new business?”
- “I am struggling to get leads. How do I get leads for my Network Marketing Business?”
So I put together a summary of the top 10 mistakes mistakes people have shared with me, when starting or growing an online business.
1. Waiting too long to launch a product/service
When you start blogging to build an audience, it’s easy to get stuck on the content “hamster wheel” for months or years without ever offering something for sale.
Finding “content” to write about is difficult. Actually NOT. Remember…What are you trying to do? Get leads…Recruit…Make Money.
Your content should reflect your “what are you trying to do?” You have content all around you.
Books on your book shelf…what you did today…your favorite movie…your product line…and “How To” ideas.
Are you launching a product or do you have a MLM Company your working with?
There are a few reasons why people tend to wait too long.
Some people are waiting for some magic Facebook audience size “200 subscribers” or “1,000” maybe “10,000” or whatever your number might be.
Waiting too long to start you business can cost you a lot of money. Just do it! The size of your audience makes no different….just start.
Some people simply talk themselves out of launching their business or product because they’re afraid no one will buy it or not being able to recruit anyone. They don’t want to fail after putting in so much time and energy.
This is “UNFOUNDED.” Someone is willing to purchase your product. Someone is willing to join your business. All you have to do is find that ONE person then repeat.
Whatever the reason, just start! If you’re building a business, you need to address the biggest risk head-on. The biggest risk you’ll face is just start! The sooner you put something out there, the closer you get to sustainable revenue.
“If your are the kind of person who is waiting for the right thing to happen, you might wait for a long time. It’s like waiting for all the traffic lights to be green for the next five miles before you stating the trip.”
2. Solving an unimportant problem
If the problem your business solves is important enough, you won’t even have to look for customers. Imagine if you had a cure for “drying paint?” How many people do you think you will attract? My guess is none.
What if your trying to solve Weight Loss but your product, idea or business opportunity is an Energy Drink. Wrong audience for your product. Re-examine your target audience.
Businesses fail all the time because they try to solve a problem nobody really cares about. If you put your product, idea or business opportunity out there and nobody buys, there’s a good chance you should look for a more important problem, not a bigger audience.
Find out what your product, idea or business opportunity SOLVES. People are looking for solutions. Use Attraction Marketing to help you understand on how to Solve their pain, issues or problem, and you will more business than you can handle. How cool is that!
“By far the most common mistake startups make is to solve problems no one has.” Paul Graham.
3. Not really listening to customers
How do you know if the problem you solve is important enough?
Listen to your customers or the people you are trying to recruit. Really listen to them.
Don’t just listen to the customers who provide validation. Listen to the ones who buys your product but don’t use it or reorder. Listen to the people who tell you they won’t buy, and find out why.
Listen to the person who you presented your business opportunity and did not join. Find out why? Did you try to recruit the wrong person? Did you forget to find out what they want or looking for? Did you not find the “hot” button?
For what ever the reason, change your presentation or get better at finding your “target audience.”
Don’t just pay lip service to your customers or leads. You don’t have all the answers, they do. There’s a reason why “the customer is always right,” because without customers you don’t have a business.
“How do you know if the problem you solve is important enough? Listen to what your customers or your potential lead is saying.
4. Not being different enough
In most markets, customers have different options to choose from. If your business has competition, you have to give your potential customers a reason to choose your offering over another.
What makes you different? Why should I join your business opportunity? How can you help me where someone else with the same product or business opportunity can not?
You need to find your USP..Unique Selling Position. What can you offer that no one else can?
Let’s say you decided to promote your business with a Blog (good idea by the way). New Bloggers try to mimic what other Bloggers are doing. In doing this they fall into the “Me To” arena. The are no different that all other bloggers.
Be unique. Offer a solution, a story, give real life examples, never ever pitch and be entertaining. You want people to came back. The more they see you the better your opportunity to have them buy or join.
Think about it from the reader or customer perspective. If they find your blog, they’ll be asking themselves “why is this blog worth spending any time on?” You have to answer that question quickly and clearly, before they click the back button.
You can’t expect to grow an audience by being an inferior version of some other better known site. Even if your site or product is arguably better than the competition, “better” is subjective.
Instead of simply trying to be better, you need to be different.
5. Choosing a topic you don’t care about
Whatever you choose to focus your business on, recruiting, lead generation, making money or selling, you’re going to need subject knowledge, fresh creativity, strategic marketing plan and unwavering stamina.
There will be competition who cares more about the topic than you do. How can you compete if the gap between your love of a topic and your competitors’ is wide?
This doesn’t mean your business has to be your #1 “passion” or life’s work (most of us don’t have one single passion in life), but don’t make things impossible by choosing something you don’t care about.
If you love your topic, stamina won’t be an issue. If you love your topic, creativity will flow, and influence will be easier to build.
Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive. -Howard Thurman
6. Starting with wrong expectations
This won’t be easy, and it won’t be quick.
Building a successful home based business is a massive undertaking. You probably can’t do it while traveling the world or If you have a full-time job, it will be much harder not impossible but harder.
If your plan involves four-hour workweeks, or if your timeline is measured in weeks or months, you will probably fail.
These are the hard truths that people rarely talk about. Overnight successes does not exist. Your original plan will probably have to be completely re-written, maybe multiple times.
If you saw a business opportunity presentation and saw fancy homes, cars, travel, all the money you can make by simply….. Wrong. It take work, rejection, “why me”, “I quit.” These are real emotions and everyone goes through it. Even the top professional have had the same feelings.
Ask yourself: will building this business still be worth it if it takes years to get there? If your answer is YES, congratulations, you are committed and you will be successful. Quitters never succeed.
Talk to some entrepreneurs who have achieved something close to what you want to achieve and copy what they did. Ask them what it really took. Ask them about giving up. Ask them not to sugarcoat it. Then ask yourself if you’re prepared for your own version of that.
7. Spending too much time thinking and not enough doing
Not much to say here that isn’t perfectly summed up in this quote:
Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration. -Thomas Edison
If your ratio of thinking-to-doing is anything less than 80% do more!
Entrepreneurs have two modes, CEO mode and worker-bee mode. In a one-person business, you have to be both.
8. Going it alone
The only reason my business exists today is because other entrepreneur friends wouldn’t let me quit. Seriously, I tried to throw in the towel and start over with something else, but they wouldn’t let me. They talked me out of it.
No one can succeed in business alone. You need people to make it work. Your customers are people, your distributors are people.
Most importantly, you need support from other entrepreneurs who are at similar stages as you are, and from others with more experience.
The more connected you become with other like-minded entrepreneurs, the more normal your quest becomes. You’ll no longer feel crazy or alone, and you’ll realize that we all face obstacles just like you’re facing.
The entrepreneurs who talked me out of quitting were part of a group that offered help and advice. When I had an issue, I turned to the group. I was never disappointed. met weekly to hold each other accountable. The group but turned out to be the most valuable resource I ever used in my business.
Reach out to another entrepreneur. Share your struggles and goals, and review your progress. This simple process is so powerful.
“The only reason my business exists today is because other entrepreneur friends wouldn’t let me quit.” Corbett Barr.
9. Confusing “blog” with “business”
Repeat after me: a blog isn’t a business. A blog isn’t a business.
A blog is an incredible platform for sharing your ideas, connecting with people and growing an audience. The same is true of podcasting, YouTubing, or any other place you might publish content for free.
Giving away free content isn’t a business. It’s a tool for building influence. Don’t count on turning that influence into sponsorships or advertising dollars. You’ll need a more direct plan for earning an income if you want your blog or to pay off.
Let me restate this one more time because it is important: A blog is not a business…giving away free content isn’t a business. These are simply tools for building a business and an audience.
Not starting at all
This is perhaps the biggest mistake most network marketers make. They never really start. Oh they say they do, but in reality, they never start.
There is always something that stops them: ” I will start tomorrow because…(fill in the blank). “I have to finish this….(fill in the blank). “I don’t have the time right now because….(fill in the blank).
There are a million reasons why you can’t start, but none of them are real.
Don’t be that friend who talks and talks about starting a business for years and never does anything thing about it.
It’s easy to get so worried about all the possible mistakes that you never get started. Even the top Internet marketers make mistakes every day. Never getting started is the only way to guarantee failure.
Starting a business isn’t a sure thing — it takes guts and intelligence and heart and hustle — but you will get better over time ONLY if you start.
The best way to ensure you’ll succeed is simply this: don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes are part of the process. So dive in, get started and find a community to support you… because you are not alone.
“If you don’t start, you are guaranteed to fail.”
