Overwhelm is bad enough, but the evil twin is a business destroyer…..
“Procrastination” is the direct result of being overwhelmed. It’s the “evil twin.”
When you have so much coming at you that you’re not sure what to do next, you will naturally do nothing. And this is when procrastination sets in, and then comes the downward spiral which wipes many out…of their business.
Realize this… Procrastination is the official language of being unsuccessful!
Unsuccessful does NOT have to happen to you. But it may, if you don’t draw a line in the sand, and do something about it, something different with the way you manage your time, and your productivity level because chances are, what you’re doing now, ain’t cuttin’ it.
Before I go any further, let’s defined Procrastination: the action of delaying or postponing something.
If you Google Procrastination you will find hundreds of hits: How to Stop Procrastination, How to Beat Procrastination, The Real Reason We Procrastinate, Overcoming Procrastination, etc. So there is no reason for me to go deeper in this article. Those site can do a much better job on helping with Procrastination than I can.
With that out of the way, let’s define Overwhelm: defeat completely, give too much of a thing, to load, heap, treat, or address with an overpowering or excessive amount of anything.
Again Google Overwhelm, and you will get articles on How to Avoid Overwhelm, Feeling Overwhelm, etc. These sites will do a better job than I can in this article.
Today we can be completely overwhelmed in an instant.
Every day we are bombarded with hundreds of ads. We have to make hundreds of decisions. Overwhelm, and stress is a normal way of life.
If you have a small business, you are faced with decisions that can effect your business. Even the Network Marketer can be overwhelmed, stressed, and face Procrastination.
Example: My Wife and I Started A Restaurant
Before we opened, there was obtaining a business license, business name, location, state license, then there was, water, electric, gas, Internet, payroll, and insurance. We had to get a alcohol license, state unemployment, health inspection, fire inspection. We had to set up a food delivery program, employee interviews, and accounting service. Of course we needed a lawyer to oversee the proper documents. Did I mention we needed fixtures, tables, chairs, kitchen items, coolers, ice machines, lighting, signage, menus, etc. Most of these required fees. Oh I forgot, we needed to set-up a bank in order to have a checking account, and credit card account. We had to collect state sales tax. Was there more? Yes! But you get the point.
Now if everyone did their job on time, we could establish an open date. You and I both know that this is impossible. Something is bound to be delayed. We were overwhelmed, and stressed for 3 months.
Example: A Store In The Old West
To bring this home, lets look at a store around the time of Wyatt Earp, Jesse James, and Billy The Kid. To open a store in the old west, you needed a building in which to show your goods. The owner typically had a house above the store. In the morning they put on their apron, and open the door. Someone would come in a purchase a few can good, and payed cash. Probably no cash register just a money drawer. The biggest decision the store owner had to make was to check his inventory, and reorder. They may of offered credit which was a pice of paper with the buyer’s name.
What I’m trying to indicate is that if you are trying to start a business, any business, and Network Marketing, we can become overwhelmed, stressed, and procrastinate in a “heart beat.”
What Does This Have To Do With Overwhelm and Procrastination?
We were so overwhelmed with trying to open our restaurant, that we almost quit. In fact after 6 months, we did. Operating a Brick and Mortar business today is a daunting task. There are so many things you have no control over. You are now self employed, but you now have JOB. A job that commands your time, planning, efforts, and careful decisions.
If your not trained to be an entrepreneur or growing up in an entrepreneur environment, operating a Brick and Mortar business can be very difficult.
This is why many turn to a Franchise. The franchise has put into place a lot of answers to the entrepreneur’s questions. The franchise has a proven procedures that have been developed to allow you the best possible road to succeed. Being overwhelmed is much less, and you don’t have the time to procrastinate.
Problem: Owning a franchise is expensive. The cost of the franchise can be expensive. So many people who want to have a business, can’t afford the upfront cost. Even if they purchase the franchise, there is still the royalty fee, overhead of the business, location, operating hours, your time, and your commitment. There is no guarantee that your business will be successful. If not, you have lost hundreds if not thousands of dollars, and your back to looking for a job.
So many turn to Network Marketing. The cost to start is low. You work out of your home. No employee. You set your own schedule. You can make as much money as you like. You have a company product, and support.
Problem: Most Network Marketers have no experience in marketing. Company training is designed toward the company’s guidelines. Your success is solely based upon you, and possibly your sponsor. Because you can be so overwhelmed in all that is required, with out professional training, doing the necessary tasks tend to be put off…your now experiencing Procrastination.
Reverse Engineering
So we need to do a little “reverse engineering” here and take a step back and put a solid “strategic plan,” and “time management” in place which will eliminate overwhelm so that it’s evil twin, procrastination, never shows it’s ugly head.
Here’s a shocker….The Marketing Plan Comes Second. NOT first. Most beginning entrepreneur’s, have this backwards which is why they struggle, spin their wheels, and eventually run out of time, become frustrated, and quit.
I’m going to take a different approach from untested marketing gadgets. Most “Internet marketers” just want to sell you on their latest, greatest sexy marketing gadget of the week, making you believe that’s all you need to be successful. Their plan will allow you to make money while you sleep…Their plan will allow you to make $10,000 dollars a month in less than 30 days….Their plan will teach you how to quit your job, and work at home being your own boss for as little as $295.00 investment.
These plans are unrealistic. They are deign to separate you from your money.
You don’t need another “marketing product or plan” or another wiz bang traffic tool or new lead generation system. Honestly. You already know what you need to do but, for some reason you just may NOT be doing it. You might feel stuck, overwhelmed which brings the evil twin in focus, Procrastination.
What you need, if you are not having the results you think you should be having, and if you’re not growing your Network Marketing business, struggling to make money or finding new qualified leads is a “personal productivity plan.” You need a professional who will take your hand and guide you.
NOT one top producer didn’t have a professional at one time or another..
Reverse Engineering will put you in a position to produce REAL results, find qualified leads, no cold calling, and make money in this New Economy, this Information Age, in which we will only have more and more information coming at us today, and in the years ahead. Not less.
Especially in the Network Marketing industry, where new info, and new distractions arise daily.
All the marketing plans and traffic resources in the world won’t matter one bit if you’re overwhelmed, distracted, not sure what to do next, running around in a million directions like a chicken with it’s head cut off…
The Missing Link
A lot of people would like to “be their own boss” and work from home BUT…. the missing link here is, most people don’t “act like” their own boss when they work from home..
And the result… their day becomes an unplanned, unfocused, unraveled mess.
They’re time is hijacked by anyone and everyone around them, they have no real direction, no plan, no respect for the clock. They spiral out of control, fast. And they inevitably, end up back “at work” working “for someone else.” This is why over 90% fail in this industry.
Don’t blame the industry, It’s not their fault. It’s not the company’s product line. It’s not the company’s pay plan. It’s NOT a marketing problem…
The problem is… you have NO “guidance” on how to be a real “work at home” Entrepreneur. You have NO “system” on how to work from home. None of us do. There is no “manual” on how to operate a home based business. There is no one standing over your shoulder telling you what to do. We haven’t been conditioned to work from home. We’ve been built to work for others…
Traditional Network Marketing
The traditional line in Network Marketing is to make a list of everyone you have ever known. Plus, add your mailman, waiters/waitress, check-out clerks, and anyone who breathes. Then call them, and explain you have a new business opportunity, and you would like to explain the business. Then you ask, “Would Tuesday or Thursday work for you?” You then wait for their response. You get, “What’s it about”,”Is this Network Marketing?” “Send me some information,” and the killer, “No I’m not interested!”
Your not professionally coached on what to do, so you mark them off your list and go to the next. Soon there is no one on your list, and now what do you do?
If your like most Network Marketers, just picking up the phone is mind blowing let alone telling someone you have a new business, and can we get together?
Question: How comfortable are you in talking to a store clerk (stranger) or even a family member, and ask, “are you opened to see a side opportunity in which you can make money?” Many are not comfortable. Result, lack of customers and/or business partners…business failure!
Network Marketers are not taught the proper way to approach people, how to talk to your prospect, and how to get them involved. Most Wing it!
You are taught the Company line, not the professional line!
Someone Calls You
My next question: “Someone calls you begging you to sponsor them. You take their information, and tell them you will get back to them. You then call them later to see if they meet Your Requirements. If they do, you sponsor them, if not you thank them for the call.” How different is that!
You chasing people or people chasing you. It’s your decision…choose which one you want?
